Huntingdon & District Branch attend Godmanchester’s Gala Day

On Saturday 5th July, shipmates Karl Webb and Pete Aston attended the Godmanchester Gala Day. With heavy rain the night before, and a grey start, it was looking like it may be a long day.

Once the carnival procession had arrived at the Gala, the day began with the Mayor, Cllr David Underwood, welcoming everyone to Godmanchester.

Huntingdon & District currently have four shipmates who are serving members of the RN, during the day, Lt Cdr Andy Duthie popped by along with S/M Clare Aston, the Branch Welfare Advisor.

The usual ‘gizits’ were passed out to our visitors, the RNA hats are always a good way to advertise the Association, but we also gave out a number of ‘goody bags’ which contain joining forms, details of the RNA HQ and Community websites, our Branch meeting places, who to contact, pens, key-rings and car stickers.

It is a long day, so help is always welcome from other members of the Branch. S/M Hilary Meers came down and spent some time on the stall – and providing burgers and ice cream for the duty watch!

Of course, there are never any concerns with people knowing where our stall is, with the White Ensign(s) flying high above the gazebo, we are easily spotted.

By the end of the day, it was a welcome relief to start de-rigging the stall. Another good day, hopefully one that will produce some new members, but at least we have again spread the word of the RNA.
