Huntingdon & District Branch: BBQ, September 2011
On Sunday 11 September 2011, shipmates from Huntingdon & District Branch were invited by our President, Chris Thomas, for a BBQ and ‘light’ refreshments at his home. Shipmates mustered and were greeted by our hosts, Chris and Elspeth; and so began an afternoon with tales of the sea – and a few not-to-be repeated tales from ashore!

Being a new member to the branch — and wanting to show my willingness to participate in all RNA events in any way possible — I did what no matelot should ever do – I ‘volunteered’ my services as BBQ chef. Had everyone chosen a ‘well done, crisp steak’, they would have been very happy with my cooking; however, with orders ranging from ‘bloody’ to ‘well done’, Hilary (my partner) stepped in, an excellent choice as she cooked the steak exactly to everyone’s liking. With sausages and salad prepared by Elspeth, the meal was almost complete; for dessert, Elspeth had cooked a fresh fruit pie, and there were some strawberries and cream, finally, a selection of cheese and biscuits completed the meal.

Although a warm Sunday afternoon, the threat from a few wandering grey clouds meant that we ate our meal in the conservatory. The Beer and wine was going down very well; however, Chris had an ace up his sleeve, he brought out the Pusser’s Rum! A toast was made in remembrance of all our shipmates, and another to thank everyone for attending. All in all, an excellent afternoon spent with new friends. Thank you shipmates.
