Newbury & District Branch: Memorial Service for HMS Tigris

Newbury & District Branch, Royal Naval Association are organising a Memorial Service and Plaque unveiling ceremony on 26th February 2017, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Submarine HMS Tigris by the people of Newbury in 1942.

Example of the proposed plaque to be unveiled at the ceremony

Newbury RNA would like to invite Standards from Area 6 and any Member who wishes to attend on the 26th February 2017. The ‘form up’ will be outside the Newbury Town Hall in the Market Square, and very close by for St Nicks Church, at 1100. The memorial will commence with a short march (amble for submariners) to the War Memorial where a wreath will be laid (supplied by Newbury RNA); then on to St Nicks Church for the Service and Act of Remembrance. On completion of the Church service, it is hoped to unveil the Blue Plaque commemorating 75 yearsof adoption at the Royal British Legion Club in Pelican Lane, Newbury. There will be a finger style buffet in the RBL after the completion of the Ceremonials and it is hoped attendees will stay to enjoy those refreshments.

In the summer of 2018 it is hoped to hold our final act of memorial to recognise the 75th Anniversary of the sinking of Tigris by the German Sub Chaser IJ212 on 37th Feb 1943, and the loss of 63 members of the ships company.
