On Sunday 14th July 2019, shipmates from Huntingdon & District Branch, Royal Naval Association, hosted a Sea Sunday Service on Market Hill in Huntingdon.
This was the first time the Branch had hoseted the event; previously the day was organised by the local Merchant Navy Association, but with age and ability, they were unable to do it last year and so offered the branch the opportunity to host in the future.
This year was to be held low-key, but as a practice to see if we could run it in future years. After permission was granted by County, District and Town Councils, planning went ahead with S/Ms Karl Webb and Revd Clifford Owen looking at how we would manage the day.
Alongside Huntingdon RNA, supporting the day were the members of the Merchant Navy Association, Huntingdon Sea Cadets and the Chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council, Cllr Richard West, as well as members of the Huntingdon Male Voice Choir and Rotary Club Choir.
S/M Revd Clifford Owen conducted the Service, Catherine Fearon was Parade Commander and readings were given by the Branch President, S/M Victor Lucas, Life Vice President, S/M Karl Webb and the representative of the Merchant Navy Association, Tony Stokes.
Wreaths were lain at the War Memorial by S/M Pete Aston and Tony Stokes. The RNA (S/M Bill Small) and Sea Cadets (Cadet Luca Scott) Paraded their Branch Standards.
Overall, a successful Sea Sunday Service and one to be proud of. We look forward to conducting the same again next year. Well done to all that took part.
