On Saturday 16th July 2016, shipmates from No 6 Area gathered at the Chesham Royal British Legion Club for their quarterly meeting, which this month, was hosted by Chesham and Amersham Branch.

The meeting was, as always, very informative, shipmates were briefed on the proceedings at National Conference, current financial position, and also of plans for an annual dinner/reception to coincide with our AGM in 2017.

However, the highlight of the meeting was the report from Bletchley & District’s shipmate Dave Corrigan, Standard Bearer for No 6 Area. Dave said that he had attended the National Standard Bearers’ competition (also with the Association of Wrens (AoW) National Standard Bearers’ Competition) at HMS Collingwood. Shipmate Dave has been attending the annual competition for a number of years, he said he will be the National Standard Bearer one day and that this year he felt that he had a great chance to win.

Following an inspection of the 8 RNA, and 5 AoW, Standard Bearers, each was put through their paces with each routine being judged for accuracy and timing. All the competitors had put in some excellent performances; the results were always going to be close. Shipmate Bob Coburn had made a slight error in his drill, but the judges felt that overall, he had just pipped Dave to the title.

Shipmate Dave’s performance had earned him the title of Deputy National Standard Bearer, he brought his trophy and National Standard Bearers’ sling to show the No 6 Area Committee and delegates. Everyone from No 6 Area knows the effort that shipmate Dave puts in whilst performing his duties of Standard Bearer, we know he will achieve his aim to become National Standard Bearer, but this year is still an excellent result and everyone showed their appreciation of his efforts. BZ shipmate, we look forward to seeing you on parade, smart and seamanlike as always.
